INTERNET
AND WEB EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
Computer
Science and Engineering
Our
department plays an active role in advancing the intellectual
frontiers of computer science, creating
new computer technology, and applying that technology
to meet the needs of today's technological society.
We are known for sharing our research ideas with the
broader community, not only through scholarly publication,
but also by creating systems that can be used by others
and can serve as models for commercial development.

Women
in a Computer Science
The
field of computer science offers challenge, fun, and
the chance to contribute to innovations that improve
the quality of our lives. Traditionally,
men have outnumbered women in computer science and engineering,
but that trend has been changing. Increasingly,
women are becoming successful computer scientists and
engineers, reaping the career benefits, and telling
their stories. Their successes are attracting more women
to the field. This brochure tells the stories of a few
of the many women in computing today.

Computer
Art and Science
It
is really difficult to discuss my "particular field",
because today it exists only as two different categories
(computer science and computer art). If I had the
power to create new categories, I would define my field
as a discipline focused on cognitive and evolutionary
sciences (artificial intelligence - artificial life),
utilizing methods of both science and of art.

Art
for Science
“There’s
a notion that art and science are polar opposites, and that
artists and scientists only visit the other side as
a kind of escape from the rigors of their own disciplines,”
says Nowlin. “I don’t think that’s
the case. There’s a place where they overlap.
There’s no doubt that science and new technology
can transform the world we live in, but they can also
transform the nature of art."
